Re: Breakdown of Telecash tariffs, and how they compare to EcoCash

They may have cheaper tariffs but as long as they don't have a good merchant network, they will never beat EcoCash. Good though, competition will force Ecocash to lower tarriffs

My Wife would like to point out that ECONET has misplaced pride and you can expect to see an econet app with in the next 2weeks that will encompass all their USSD rubbish

to ECONET and the other 2 networks learn to eat that humble pie - its alright that you dont know things - we are here to help

I did not get a chance to use the app but assume the security problem was on the ENTER PIN area, perhaps the app could secretly capture the user's PIN.

So we then ask if they quickly blocked the app, why have they not blocked PAY4APP?

Eliazer if you are referring to pay4app's API, that isn't an Ecocash API in the strictest sense of the word. The face is, as things stand, Econet have not given anyone their API unless I've missed something (Which is highly unlikely). There is basically still no official seamless integration with the EcoCash platform.

Re: Is WhatsApp making a big emerging market mistake with the no frills strategy?

I think it's a matter of target Market. As @L.S.M. Kabweza said in the article, Indian viewers don't mind ads. Same applies to Chinese IM users, to a larger extend Asian users. These users don't mind the bloatware as we see it, they are in love with their stickers and games. take a look @ their competitors Line and Kakao

Now for Whatsapp, i think their strategy is catered for the no frills market the so called developed markets, and the African markets which generally follow the developed market trends. That means cleaner interfaces, less skeuomorphism. I think in that context Whatsapp is guaranteed for success. until design trends change of course. I'm willing to pay my dollar for the moment.

If you have unlimited data then maybe these ads will be wanted. But on a limited plan like most Zimbabweans ads are just annoying. Consuming data for things you dont wanna see

True on us African generally aspiring for the developed market trends. But then again then sometimes I think it's just a small 10% that want the 'clean' apps - the type you generally find on Twitter. It's also the type that generally hate Nigerian movies coz they are not US-standard quality.
But despite being hated by this small group, you probably noticed Nigerian movies are hugely popular here. My point being not to measure African tastes by the tastes of this small #twimbo group. The other group is much large and consumer targeting wise, probably more lucrative.

Great point. But maybe we shouldn't look at it as useless ads eating up the data. maybe more as useful content helping the consumer discover new staff they may want. ;)

Well if WhatsApp would start doing ads, they would increase the data consumption of the APP thereby defeating the whole reason why its such a hit especially in Zimbabwe. Its cheap to use, obviously with the high cost of data we see here, an app on which 1mb can take you through a few days is most welcome. Consider Mxit and 2go, these apps where not so much data hoggers hence their popularity here, Opera mini vs Chrome mobile... etc
ADS will KILL WhatsApp here

The tariffs are really really good... I wonder how the titans at Econet Park will react. Although I believe the killer will be the ability to send money across all networks.

How Much is the service? Again, If i sell my Tomatoes and earn $101 and Deposit into ECOCASH, they will charge me $8.50 if i send it to someone who is on ECONET but not registered on ECOCASH, and they will also charge the poor recipient $3.50 to cash out the money, meaning the $101 I earned from tomatoes will only be $89.00 by the time it reaches the recipient. ECOCASH will have consumed $12 of my hard-earned $101.00. Even Brick-n-mortar banks dont have such high bank fees!

It would be nice to know where the 2000% increase comesfrom, if you had 100 uses a 2000% increase is possible, we need more detail as opposed to percentages. By the Way how muchis Reward Kangai Earning, with the shenanigans at ZBC and Psmas are we wrong to wonder whats happening at Net one and POTRAZ?????

Sweet, am downloading as I type.

For Techzim, please may I suggest you add QR codes inside your article for things like apps, makes it easier to scan and receive, unless you've invented a SBEAM-to-Monitor app. Now that would be cool!

Developers. I have a feeling Gedion was up to mischief. He works for TPS which is an Econet subsidiary. This was work in progress and he thought otherwise. Now he is in deep shit. To know the long codes , you need to be working within. This is not a days work as he claims.Good app though.
